Our graduating seniors in Art Studio and Digital Media Design have spent this semester diving into independent inquiries—defining avenues for their creative voices, articulating new problems to solve. With practices which are thoughtful, informative, persuasive, critical, practical, experimental or expected, their capstone projects embody the nature of our multidisciplinary and multi-faceted degree programs. This semester has been marked by a disruption which has changed daily life for everyone. Beginning mid-March, many students were tasked with pivoting in-progress projects (ranging from cyanotypes on glass to large-scale sculptures) to exist in a digital format; with resilience and levity, they adapted and re-focused their efforts and concepts. I really wanted to challenge myself for this project. I chose to do this series as digital illustration rather than as analog illustration. I did this because for my final project I really wanted to explore new ideas and try new ways of expressing myself. The theme, however, is one that I have done artwork on before. This is a very personal project since it is something that I have firsthand experience with. These five images relate to one another by being about suicide and depression. Each image depicts an act of suicide or a coping mechanism for depression in a still life form. The center image is a self-portrait. I decided to include an image of me because I have struggled with these issues for many years. The style that I decided to go with after a lot of debate is a sketchy linework one. I did this because when you are suicidal, things sort of lose their refinement and become messy. For this series of images, I really dug deep into my depression and let it guide how I composed these images. It can affect the things we spend our money on as well as the causes we support. People are often willing to pay more for something if the company and brand’s values align with their own. The social impact of a company may have the power to alter the perspective of people’s views as well. Anchal is a non-profit, social enterprise that provides alternative careers in textile design and production to exploited and marginalized women in Ajmer, India and Louisville, Kentucky. Behind the Brand was created with the intention of telling the story and spreading awareness of Anchal’s social impact around the world. This book highlights the work and process of creating the unique products which Anchal sells. It emphasizes the key aspects the brand stands behind: global sisterhood, impact through design and sustainability. The book, Behind the Brand,was designed with the intent of appearing hand crafted and created with a sketchbook style mentality. The book was meant to feel as an inside look into a brand that was put together by those that work there. It utilizes a series of scanned textural items, the appearance of hand-placed images and body copy written from interviews and information on the brands website. Using old family photographs, I recreated a larger representation of the original quilt using the basket pattern. Giving the audible history of my family is my paternal grandmother. I wanted to be able to go back to the beginning of how these two families came together and the events that brought us together today. This work is also a reflection on family tradition, oral history and how my roots have shaped me into the man I am today. I enjoy photography and capturing people in specific moments in time, as well as illustration and being able to draw people in reality, as well as in a fantasy world. My illustrations presented here explore the correlation between a person and their Zodiac sign. A person’s sign is more than certain characteristics that fall under a stereotyped large group of people. They are a balance of all the things that makes a person who they are. Portraits are a way to capture a person’s unique features, whether it be their eye and hair color, or the clothes they’re wearing, no two portraits are the same. With portraiture, you are able to learn about a person without ever needing to meet them. In this piece, I have illustrated four of my female friends to represent their Zodiac sign, as well as each Element that the signs fall under. For the element Water, I have created a portrait of McKenzie Abu Taha for her sign, Cancer. For Air, I have Tiffany Horton who is a Libra. For Fire, I have Taylor Singer, who is a Sagittarius. With the series “Dagas Mannaz” I have created something that reflects myself and reflects empathy with emotions. Some, like myself, struggle to recognize emotion or create empathy. The project simulates the seven emotions that humans can easily detect in seven portraits. Anger, happiness, disgust, sadness, contempt, fear, and surprise. The seven portraits are of people who I care about most. My inspirations are Alex Grey, a psychedelic artist, and Chuck Close, a famous portraiture. I wanted to create my own portraits in a psychedelic form. All portraits are created with blocked shapes that represent different shades of the human structure. Each portrait also portrays different colors that symbolize towards their specific emotion. I have also interpreted specific runes into their eyes to replace their pupils. The runes symbolize the emotion in each portrait. The runes come from the Nordic Elder Futhark language, and with the nords, their culture was heavily influenced by a great journey to Vahalla, the Heavens in their world. Having these symbols represent the journey of emotions one goes through in their lives. While viewing, I wanted the audiences to connect with the portraits in their own emotional way. Someone may feel closer to one portrait than the other and thus creating the concept of empathy with it. I am amazed by the details that can be found on a single plant. While I am out in nature, along with my digital camera, I find a moment to escape from the troubles of this world. My peace, joy and excitement return to me as I capture the basic elements of art that can be found in nature. Capturing these moments, within the confines of my camera, brings instant satisfaction. The quick click of my shutter comforts me, as the words of an old friend. However, the real satisfaction that I get by exploring themes of creation, is that it reminds me of my relationship with God. All aspects of creation every flower, twig, sunset or body of water reminds me of my faith. Realistic and non-representational images of plant materials are provided to my audience. In many of my images I use macro photography to unveil the smallest details that could be easily overlooked creating subject matter out of line, shape, pattern and color. Another approach is to incorporate a very shallow depth of field, allowing the bokeh of my lens to create soft, pleasing circles of light within my image. A shallow depth of field also allows me to create images that are very painterly and ethereal. On the opposite spectrum I provide realistic imagery of plant materials. They are enhanced only by natural light, and presented in their natural beauty. Another avenue of my exploration is portrait photography. Bringing light to the fact that we are “fearfully and wonderfully made” Psalm 139:14 is what drives my portrait work. I believe that all life is a miracle; every person, animal or plant. My work also communicates that all people should be treated with respect and kindness. That all people should have access to resources to better their lives. I grew up in a small, rural town in the Appalachian Mountains, so when I moved to Lexington to pursue college, I had no doubts that I would come to love the city. However, my parents insisted that I would hate the city as they do, and that I would prefer the life I had back home. Unsurprisingly, I enjoyed the city and ended up making life-long friends here, just like Arnold does in his adventure. Arnold and I were right about liking the city—and this conceptual work aims to show what Arnold’s world and character will be like when fully realized. Represented are a hand-me-down pair of boots, a card case belonging to a dead relative, beads made from the ashes of a loved one, a blanket given at birth, and a pair of socks kept over a lifetime. These objects of significance are photographed and chopped up, as our memory reconstructs narrative in ways that are not always entirely factual. Deconstructed objects are printed on transparent surfaces, showing this separation of pieces while still being a whole when viewed at a set angle. Presenting the photograph as a whole from a singular angle speaks to the fleeting nature of objects and references anthropological fragments found in dig sites. Against the wall exists text speaking to the personal history and nature of these objects, peaking through as the viewer moves around the work.
