Past & Present
Digital Photography, Photoshop

Having moved to college in 2016, I found myself with a lot of nostalgia for my home. Nowadays every visit home comes with a bittersweet reminder that as we evolve and change so do the places where we have fond memories. These photographs represent the disconnect between the nostalgia for the past and the reality of the present. They have been abstracted, obscured, layered, or fragmented to reflect the surreal experience of returning somewhere only to be met with the massive change that has occurred in your absence. To a certain degree this happens to everyone; people we love pass away, houses are remodeled, or unforgettable events have occurred that shape the way we perceive an important location.

This project is very personal, each image is a different place from my childhood representing the people who influenced me most in my childhood. Circumstances have changed since I was a child and these photographs reflect that. For this project I used surrealistic techniques inspired by famous photographers of the past such as Duane Michals, David Douglass Duncan, and Hans Hajek Halke.
