From Stitching to Storytelling
Mixed Media, 73” x 82”, 2020

The work I make is narrative driven and is used to tell stories. “From Stitching to Storytelling” uses a quilt my great grandmother made to influence my recreation. Using old family photographs, I recreated a larger representation of the original quilt using the basket pattern. Giving the audible history of my family is my paternal grandmother. I wanted to be able to go back to the beginning of how these two families came together and the events that brought us together today. This work is also a reflection on family tradition, oral history and how my roots have shaped me into the man I am today.

I wanted to use this project to reconnect with my origins and use this piece as a way to end one chapter of my life as I prepare for the next one.  As I plan to graduate and move away leaving behind my small-town roots, I wanted to reflect on my upbringings and pay homage to those who have helped me most.
